5 Signs You’re Ready to Build a Custom Home

Building a new custom home is a huge decision, so you want to be sure the timing is just right. Here are some of the signs you should be looking for.
- Comfort is an issue. If you don’t feel comfortable in your home, that’s a sign. Maybe space is an issue, or you’ve grown out of your current home’s style; whatever the reason may be, if your home doesn’t feel like home, it may not be right for you anymore. Your home should be your oasis. If it isn’t, it’s time to consider building your dream Calvosa home.
- You have the money. If you’ve reached a point of financial ability and are ready to spend the money, go for it. Depending on the area and home, building a custom home will likely give you a better than normal return on your investment.
- You’ve found the perfect spot. Whether you fell in love with a piece of land, found a community you want to be part of, or there’s a school district that’s simply marvelous, why wait to be part of it? It’s time to make the move! You’ll have the opportunity to perfectly site your home, taking advantage of the view, or tucking it into that private corner.
- You know what you want. One of the benefits of building a brand new custom home is being able to have exactly what you want. You make every decision from the foundation to the doorknobs, the cabinets to the paint colors.
- Flexibility is a priority. Do you need space for multiple generations of your family? Do you want a house with Universal Design features? Are you a fitness nut who wants your own gym? Does your car collection need a new home? Custom building means you can adapt to any or all of these! A custom home is personal, one-of- a-kind. It’s built from scratch just for your family.
Listen to your instincts. Your home should make you happy and comfortable. Plus, the right home gives you a sense of stability, belonging and pride. If your current home or situation doesn’t fulfill these needs, it’s time for a new abode!
If you are considering building a custom home, think about what you want, what you need, and what you’ve always dreamed of. Then come see us at The Calvosa Organization!
Creating Welcoming Spaces in Your Calvosa Home

While most days your home primarily exists just for your immediate family’s daily needs, there are times – holidays, birthdays, BBQs, sleepovers – when extended family and friends are welcomed into your abode. A Calvosa home is made for these times!
When you entertain, your home should be a place for good times, happy memories and fun experiences. Whether it’s a neighborhood pool party or a quiet night watching movies with the kids, your home’s design should reflect your entertaining style. Here are some things to consider as you create your entertainment spaces.
Make Yourself at Home!Good design is what makes one home better than another. When you build a new Calvosa home, you’ll appreciate the thought that goes into our designs. From huge family rooms with fireplaces and plenty of room to play, to gorgeous kitchens with islands that are perfect for buffet-style parties, to elegant dining rooms just made for celebratory dinners – our homes are designed for the way you live!
It’s All in the Details. The features and finishes we offer make Calvosa homes even more welcoming. In the kitchen, for example, the custom-made cabinetry is gorgeous, but the countertops are stunning. Both granite and quartz countertops are available in an array of patterns and colors. Unique light fixtures throughout the home add ambience and warmth, while oak floors, coffered ceilings, and luxurious tile create an air of old-world elegance. The hand-crafted molding and trim (paneling, crown, chair rails) add visual interest and define the spaces. All of these elements add up to a home that is instantly warm and welcoming.
The Great-er Outdoors. In the warmer months, outdoor living spaces give you additional places to entertain. Patios, screened porches, pools, pool houses, outdoor kitchens, retaining walls, fireplaces or fire pits… you name it, and The Calvosa Organization can design and build the perfect outdoor entertaining space.
What’s your entertaining style? From a fully-loaded media room to a rustic covered porch, just bring your entertainment wish-list to Vince Calvosa, and he can make it happen! We can’t wait to help you create the gathering place of your dreams!

New Year … Hot New Products & Features
A new year means new home trends, technology and products! (The recent International Builders Show, Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, and Consumer Electronics Show introduced a ton of new and innovative inventions for the home.)
Here at Calvosa, we are committed to building homes that reflect each family’s unique lifestyle. Our builder and in-house design team are up on all the latest trends, so you’ll find plenty of inspired elements for your home! And since our homes are smart home ready, you can bring us your latest technology, and we can install it! Check out some of the hot products, designs and features we love!
1.) Understated design. Design-wise, a clean, less cluttered look is all the rage. At Calvosa, we’ve already embraced this trend. Our kitchens and bathrooms are models of sleek design, with smooth surfaces, lots of glass, and unfussy tile and accents. Our flooring and trim are elegant and sophisticated without being overbearing. And our exteriors are classically inspired, yet timeless.

2.) Outdoor living spaces. Spacious patios, cozy courtyards, screened-in porches, and welcoming porticos… Extended outdoor living spaces are a trend that we really go for! From fire pits to fireplaces, gas grills to pizza ovens, TVs to real furniture, this is definitely not your parents’ backyard experience.
3.) Smart home technology. To say that this field has exploded is an understatement. In the span of a few years, we’ve gone from smart thermostats to whole house automation. This year’s slate of smart home products include increasingly smarter kitchen appliances, smart bathtubs, smart faucets, smart garage doors, even smart mirrors! (Make sure you invest in a smart home hub, too. Someone has to manage all this technology!)
4.) Energy-efficient everything. From insulation to HVAC, lighting to plumbing, every year brings better, more efficient systems. We strive to incorporate the best possible products and building practices in every Calvosa home, including high performance low-e insulated glass windows and sliding glass doors, smart energy testing, air sealing and duct sealing, and even solar energy capabilities. Follow through with your New Year’s Resolutions!
Making resolutions for the new year is a time-honored tradition. We vow to improve ourselves – exercise more, start (or finish!) a project… the list is endless. This year, see how many resolutions you can keep – right from the comfort of your Calvosa home!
- Get organized. Even though we live in a digital age, there still seems to be paper everywhere! Take time to de-clutter your drawers and desk. Sort everything. Designate a spot that’s just for paperwork or bills, and create a system for sorting things as soon as they come in. Clean out the closets – and see how much space you have.
- Create a healthier environment. Think about what you’re eating, wearing orcleaning with. Get the junk food out of the house and load up on lots of nuts, fruits and veggies. Be aware of the chemicals in your cleaning supplies. Replace them with non-toxic or earth friendly versions if possible. Buy better made clothes made with natural fibers.
- Make technology your friend. Whether you’re trying to lower your heating bills or find time to exercise consistently, automation is the key. Automated thermostats. Automated bill paying. Automatic reminders. It’s easier to develop and stick to new habits with a little help from technology.

- Find a space for everything.Go room by room, and think about what you really use each part of your home for — watching movies and reading in the great room, for example. Make sure that everything you need to do these things is at hand, and get rid of anything unrelated.
- Spend more time with family. Schedule family dinners, game nights, movie nights – whatever your family likes. Turn off the phones, and settle down in the great room with some popcorn and a plan to spend uninterrupted time together as a family.
- Actually exercise more. You’ve been thinking of creating your own mini fitness center, so go ahead and turn your bonus room into a gym or yoga studio. And use your smart phone or tablet to remind you to exercise every day. No excuses!
- Read more. You know that pile of books (traditional or digital) that’s been sitting unread for ages? Create a reading nook for yourself in the study or guest room. Find a cozy chair, a good light and a shelf or table, and get comfy. (Don’t be surprised if you keep finding kids in your nook, though!)
- Learn a new skill.Hop on the DIY bandwagon. Choose an area that appeals to you (sewing, woodworking, painting) and search for online tutorials, pick up a book, or hunt for a local class or workshop to get started. The sense of fulfillment you’ll get when you finish a project is unbeatable.
The LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum in West Sayville is Underway
We work on a variety of building projects here at The Calvosa Organization. But currently there is one project that holds a special place for Vince Calvosa.
Vince is acting as the Director of Construction for the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum in West Sayville. The museum, which celebrated its groundbreaking on November 2nd, is named in honor of Patchogue native LT Michael Murphy, who died trying to save his SEAL team members during a gunfight with the Taliban in 2005.
“I am so proud to be a part of this project,” says Vince. “It’s an honor to work with so many members of the community in building this museum and education center.”The LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum will be located next to the Long Island Maritime Museum, a unique waterfront site that is dedicated to preserving the maritime history of this area. The museum will feature Navy SEAL history, classroom facilities, and public spaces for community events. While classified as a museum, the building will also be a state-of-the-art educational facility as well as a memorial to our fallen SEALS.
This will be the second Navy SEAL Museum in the nation built to commemorate the service of all United States Naval Special Warfare Operators, and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Visitors will experience a museum and education center that makes personal and emotional connections to U.S. Naval Special Warfare Operators, and the values that govern the SEAL Community. The museum’s mission is to help visitors to understand the meaning and price of freedom, and appreciate what it means to put service above self. Throughout the museum, visitors will have opportunities to interact with and learn about the SEAL Community via films and videos that honor and promote the ideals associated with Special Warfare Operators. The goal is for each visitor to have an informative and inspiring experience.
Designed to act as “a living, breathing memorial”, the museum will also have a space for our local Sea Cadets to study and train. The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is an organization that offers young Americans (ages 11 through 17) the opportunity to realize personal success and achievement through a nautically oriented training program. They develop interest and skill in basic seamanship, while learning the value of patriotism, courage, self-reliance, teamwork and accountability.
In addition, the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum will add to the area’s already rich array of historic and cultural attractions. Completion of the museum is expected to be in late 2018 / early 2019.

There are many ways you can help and support the museum grow. Any contribution of time, money or resources are invaluable to us.
